Depart York · 9.00am

  • Masham — historic market town
  • Jervaulx Abbey — a 12th-century Cistercian ruin set in peaceful parkland
  • Middleham — a racehorse training centre with a ruined castle where Richard III trained as a knight and later made his principal northern residence
  • Swineside and Penhill — both with sweeping views over lower Wensleydale

Lunch · c.12.30pm

  • Aysgarth Falls or Bolton Castle — depending on timings. Bolton Castle is a remarkably well-preserved 14th-century fortress with time to explore freely

Return York · c.5.00pm via Leyburn

Cross the moors from the market town of Helmsley to the historic port of Whitby, passing some of the most dramatic open countryside in England.

  • Sutton Bank — with a stop at the Kilburn White Horse, a large figure cut into the limestone escarpment of the North York Moors
  • Helmsley — an attractive market town with a ruined medieval castle
  • Blakey Ridge — crossing the open moorland plateau at one of the highest points of the North York Moors

  • Whitby — two to three hours to explore freely. Historic fishing port with clifftop abbey ruins, the old town and harbour
